AAHA Award Winners

AAHA Practitioner of the Year, R. Michael Thomas, DVM
R. Michael Thomas, DVM received a standing ovation when he was named the 2008 AAHA Practitioner of the Year, for his commitment to AAHA, the profession, the community, and his clients and patients through overall excellence in small animal medicine and surgery. He accepted the award as “the capstone of my career,” and gave thanks by saying, “You don’t drive down the road in Oklahoma and see a turtle on a fence post and think he didn’t have help getting there. There are so many people that have helped me get to this point.”

Dr. Thomas earned his DVM with honors at Auburn University in 1968. Throughout his career, Thomas has been active within the Association in a variety of capacities, including president in 2001-2002. He has contributed to AAHA’s mission of excellence in veterinary medicine by serving on numerous task forces, committees and project teams.

Dr. Thomas has also been present in many other industry organizations, including the American Veterinary Medical Association, Indiana Veterinary Medical Association and Central Indiana Veterinary Medical Association, where he served as president in 1993.

Currently, Dr. Thomas is a member of the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, Veterinary Information Network Board of Directors, Veterinary Management Group I, and president elect for the Companion Animal Parasite Council.

His professional interests include companion animal general practice, orthopedic and general surgery, dermatology, promotion of the human-animal bond, and training and development of support staff.

R. Michael Thomas, DVM and his work are examples of the standard of excellence we all in the veterinary industry strive to achieve.

Hill’s Animal Welfare and Humane Ethics Award, Roger Clarke, BVSc
Roger Clarke, BVSc was awarded the Hill’s Animal Welfare and Humane Ethics Award for his efforts in advancing animal welfare through extraordinary service and furthering humane principles, education and understanding.

Dr. Clarke graduated from the University of Queensland, Australia with his BVSc in 1964, and established the Bundoora Veterinary Hospital in 1969, now one of only three emergency clinics in Melbourne, Australia.

Dr. Clarke has had a distinguished career as a veterinarian, educator, international consultant and leader in the profession. He has won numerous merits, including the Australian Small Animal Veterinary Association’s (ASAVA) Distinguished Service Award in 1985 and 2006, making him one of only two ASAVA members to receive this honor twice. Dr. Clarke was also named ASAVA Practitioner of the Year in 1988 and received the Gilruth Prize for Service to the Profession, the highest award the Australian Veterinary Association can give to its members, in 2005.

Active in industry organizations and associations internationally, Dr. Clarke has made a powerful impact on veterinary medicine. His contributions to the profession in all capacities are incredible—the list is endless, making him truly deserving of this award. 

Nestlé Purina Petcare Award, Dan Jordan, DVM
The Nestlé Purina Petcare Award was presented to Dan Jordan, DVM in recognition of his outstanding efforts to positively influence the lives of animals and people.

The patient is at the heart of every aspect revolving around Dr. Jordan’s practice. He and his team achieve an exemplary standard of care and celebrate the human-animal bond in everything they do.

Dr. Jordan is active in his community, as well as in several veterinary associations, including the American Animal Hospital Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, Association of Avian Veterinarians, Texas Veterinary Medical Association and Harris County Veterinary Medical Association.

Throughout his career, Dr. Jordan has been recognized with the TVMA Award: Exotic Species Practitioner of the Year in 2005, Acorn Award, Nature Discovery Center in 2000, for giving freely of his time and services for the benefit of injured wildlife, and the Texas A & M Clinical Pharmacology Award in 1981.

Dr. Jordan’s intense passion for pursuing the highest standard of care makes him well-deserving of this award.

Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Award, Larry Dee, DVM
Larry Dee, DVM was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the improvement of the well-being of companion animals in the international veterinary community with the Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Award.

Dr. Dee earned his DVM at Auburn University in 1969. Currently, he is working as an adjunct faculty member in the department of medical sciences at the University of Florida, and is co-owner and associate veterinarian at Hollywood Animal Hospital in Florida.

Dr. Dee has been active in countless professional organizations internationally, including the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, where he served as president from 1993-1994, Florida Veterinary Medical Association as president from 1998-1999, American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, also president in 1989-1990, and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, for which he was president from 2004-2006.

Among many honors throughout his career, Dr. Dee has received Distinguished Practitioner in the National Academy of Practice in Veterinary Medicine in 1993, Florida VMA Practitioner of the Year in 1995 and AAHA Practitioner of the Year in 2001.

AAHA Award, Michael Paul, DVM
Michael Paul, DVM received the AAHA Award for his outstanding contributions toward the betterment of AAHA and the veterinary profession.

Dr. Paul received his DVM from Kansas State University in 1972. He currently serves as the Executive Director and CEO of the Companion Animal Parasite Council.

Dr. Paul served as president of AAHA in 1999-2000, chaired an AAHA task force that developed canine vaccine guidelines, served as a founding member of the National Commission on Veterinary Economic Issues, and has served on numerous committees and task forces for the California VMA, AAHA, and the AVMA.

Dr. Paul’s extensive service to the veterinary profession and to AAHA makes him a truly worthy recipient of this award.
